We closed out a wonderful Columbus Day with having my mother in law over for dinner and then hanging out by a bon fire in our yard til late. We ate popcorn, and then Matthew decided to flip our bowls over and make drums of them. Ella loved it and joined in the mini band, insisting her Daddy and I dance around the fire together to their beat. It's time like these I'm glad not only that the kids don't have to get up early the next morning to be rushed off to school, but also that we don't live in a subdivision!!!!! I'm sure we looked pretty loony, but boy did we have fun!
On Tuesday, one of our Math activities was an estimation game out of a Scholastic book I got online for free recently. I filled 5 jars with different items: grapes, popcorn, magnets, animal crackers, and M&Ms. I folded
post-it notes in half and labeled the front of each one and wrote the number on the inside of each one. We sang a little song for each one, and Ella wrote her estimates on cut outs of jars. Then we peeked inside the post-it notes or counted to see if she was right. Then, she wrote down the correct numer and wrote < & > sentences of the two numbers and illustrated the jar cut outs with the correct number of objects. She drew M&Ms on the M&M one but understandably didn't want to draw 140 of them.
Once the estimation game was over, we ate the snacks, and Matthew and I counted snacks together as I put them on his plate.
Ella made a color game with Matthew. She asked him what color each M&M was. If he got the color right, he got to eat the M&M. If he got it wrong, she ate it. Smart little cookie she is to come up with a game like that. For once, he cared about learning colors! And they both had their fair share of M&Ms. Below is Matthew drawing M&Ms just because he wanted to. He loves to draw.
Fall is such a beautiful time of year, and Ella feeds off of my excitement for the season, helping decorate and making paintings with me. She wanted to make this paper chain yesterday to count down to Halloween, when we plan to spend a fun Fall evening with our family.
When Matthew woke up, he saw it first thing and came running to me, hugging me and smiling and said, "Mommy, it is AMAZING! Thank you so much for making that for me!" I explained that Ella and I both made it and that he and Ella can take turns ripping one ring off each day til Halloween. He was so excited. It was so sweet!
Ella and I made these Fall paintings below one day after a trip to Hobby Lobby where we bought a large pack of craft wood with our 40% off coupon.
I painted corn, an apple, a pumpkin, and a sunflower.
Ella made a pumpkin tree.
(Yes, she knows pumpkins grow on vines on the ground, but I love her creativity!!)
