Columbus Day, how fun!!

Columbus Day Hand Art
idea from Hand-Shaped Art book
 Ella's ship and Matthew's ship
Ella made her sails have pirate signs, because she loves pirates! She traced and cut out the hand herself, whereas I traced Matthew's hand for him and helped with the cutting.
Matthew made his water "splashing up" over the ship. I was most impressed
by his 4 circles he drew on the ship for the portholes!

We looked at the globe and talked about where Christopher Columbas sailed from, where he was trying to go, and where he wound up. Matthew was in a picture taking mood today!
We also made maps and mini ships.
I got the idea below from the Enchanted Learning website.

Matthew's map and ships

Ella's map and ships. We labeled the ships (Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria) after this picture was taken.

Matthew enjoyed mixing the yellow and blue paint to make green for the land on his map.

After our Columbus Day fun, we went outside and gathered leaves and took pictures for our nature studies,  and Ella worked on her nature observation sheet while laying up in the fort of her swing set.
For Science, we have pretty much ditched the book we were originally using and are doing nature studies only with a plan to go where curiosity leads. I'm now using the following website for ideas:
Since I read the book For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay almost 2 years ago,
I've wanted to follow a Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling. However, in stressing about meeting state standards, I've gone off track and followed more of a school at home approach. It's causing more stress than necessary and is just really not what I had in mind when I daydreamed about homeschooling in the past. So I'm working to go back to more of a Charlotte Mason style.

The kids thought these pumpkins were looking rather bare, and they wanted to paint them.
So we did.
