My Father's World- Kindergarten Lessons 5 & 6

Lesson 6 was on "T"- Turtle
We talked about the fable "The Hare and the Tortoise", and our words to remember were, "I don't quit; I persevere". Ella drew a picture of the hare and the tortoise. Our bible verses were on perseverance. They were Philippians 3:13-14, Hebrews 12:1, and Galatians 6:9.

Ella made a turtle by painting paper plates to staple together with legs, a tail, and a head. She also colored and cut out a turtle and glued it to green paper and drew foods for her turtle.

We also played a game where Ella had to go from one to another moving like a turtle, a kangaroo, a snake, a bird, and a child, and then move like a tree. We continued with our calendar, weather, and straw counting. Ella also did some reading and spelling. The curriculum is just now introducing some reading although Ella has been reading some for a while now. I'm glad we're finally getting to this in the curriculum. Ella wanted to spell words on her own, so I said words aloud using letters we've covered so far in the curriculum (S, M, A, L, N, T) and she wrote them down. The words we did were last, man, mat, tan, sat, and Sam. Her spellings were all correct! I was proud. I walked away while she was spelling "sat", and she got a little confused about the letter placement with the lines, but otherwise, I though her first "spelling test" went well.

Lesson 5 was on "N" - Nest

We talked about animal homes. We played a matching game with animals and their homes that we made out of pictures glued on note cards. We read Psalm 91: 1-4a, Psalm 17:18-9, and Thessalonians 3:3. Our words to remember were "God takes good care of me." The lesson suggested making a bird's nest out of mud, straw, and twigs, but we did this last fall, so we didn't do it again. We did, however go to the local nature center and make a bird feeder out of a pinecone, peanutbutter, and bird seed. We had a discussion on the sequence of birds making a nest, laying eggs, sitting on them, taking card of their young, and the young learning to fly and get their own food. Ella made a tree picture with torn paper and made a nest in it with a bird.

We read "A House is a House for Me", and Ella made her own version of the book. She narrated it, I wrote it, and she illustrated it.

Of course, we continued adding a straw to our cup each day and a number to our 100 chart. We kept up with the weather on a calendar, and Ella traced the calendar numbers in green and yellow, making a patters. We practiced handwriting, drawing, and some math and continued practicing letter sounds and did some reading. We also got a lesson on rocks at the local nature center. Ella got to break a geode open, make a bird feeder, and do some art.
